Walmart is making headlines again, this time with a major leadership shake-up right here in the heart of Bentonville. After more than a decade steering the world’s largest retailer, Doug McMillon has announced his retirement, closing out a defining chapter for both the company and its hometown.

Stepping into the role is John Furner, current President & CEO of Walmart U.S. and a seasoned Walmart leader who grew his career inside the organization before rising to the top. He officially takes over on February 1, 2026.

McMillon will remain on the board during the transition, but it’s Furner who will chart the next stage of Walmart’s growth, innovation, and global impact.

What makes this transition especially exciting?

  • Furner brings deep experience across the company, from store operations to executive leadership.
  • His time leading Walmart U.S. has been marked by modernization, digital acceleration, and a strong focus on people.
  • And for Bentonville, it’s a fresh reminder that global retail innovation starts right here in Northwest Arkansas.

As Walmart turns the page, the business world is watching, and Bentonville is once again at the center of the story.
